Pay levels flat in second quarter

Average pay in the second quarter of this year was unchanged compared with the same period last year. Official figures show that average pay in the second quarter of this year was unchanged compared with the same period last year.

The Central Statistics Office said average hourly earnings were €21.80, virtually flat compared with €21.81 a year earlier. Average pay had fallen by 0.3% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year.

In the private sector, average pay per hour fell 0.5% over the year to €19.33, but the public sector average increased 0.6% to €28.90. The CSO points out, however, that public sector pay has fallen by 3.9% over the past two years, compared with a 0.1% increase in the private sector.

Six of the 13 categories recorded annual falls in pay, with the biggest drop of 7.4% coming in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector. Construction pay fell 6.3%.

Smaller companies - those with fewer than 50 workers - saw average hourly pay fall by 2.1% in the past 12 months, while there was little change in larger companies.
